2×72 vs 2×48 Belt Grinders for Knife Making

Belt size is the first machine decision in stock-removal knifemaking, not horsepower bragging. A 2×72 (two-inch by seventy-two-inch belt) is the hobby-to-small-shop standard because belt selection is enormous, the loop runs cooler, and most jigs assume that length. A 2×48 is a shorter loop: less abrasive in circulation, smaller footprint, belts that cost less each — and less forgiveness on a long chef blank.

01 Direct answer

Buy a 2×72 with variable speed if you are making knives as a craft — especially kitchen-length blades, distal tapers, and any jig you might add later. Buy a 2×48 if bench space and belt cost matter more than speed, and your blanks stay short. Do not buy a 1×30 hardware-store sander thinking you will upgrade later. Confirm 110 V versus 220 V before it ships to a Canadian shop.

02 What the numbers mean

The first number is belt width; the second is loop length. Two inches of width is enough for most knife bevels and handle work. Seventy-two inches of loop means more abrasive in circulation, more time for the belt to cool, and a parts ecosystem (contact wheels, platens, small wheels, tool rests) built for knifemakers. Forty-eight inches is a shorter loop: the same two-inch width on many machines, less cooling, fewer aftermarket jigs, cheaper belts.

Variable speed is non-negotiable on either size. Hog annealed steel at high speed; finish, sharpen, and work handle materials at low speed. A single-speed grinder burns tips and tempers. Motor size: 1.5 to 2 HP is the 2×72 sweet spot; under 1 HP you will bog in hardened steel.

Qualitative comparison for knifemaking, not a lab test. Voltage, VFD, and platen quality still decide more than the inch marks. 2×36 and 1×30 hardware sanders are a different, worse class for this job.

  • 2×72 — pro: cool grinding, belt selection, jig ecosystem, kitchen-length blanks. Con: price, footprint, heavier freight.
  • 2×48 — pro: smaller bench, cheaper belts, enough machine for short knives. Con: hotter loop, fewer attachments, slower on long bevels.
  • Either — skip fixed-speed, skip mystery belt size, skip a 1×30 “upgrade path.”

06 Freight: 15%, and it is never free

Belt grinders are large workshop equipment. They always ship at 15% of the item price and are not eligible for free shipping, even when the machine itself is thousands of CAD or the cart is huge. That is a different rule from knives and small goods (10%, free over $150 CAD). Mixed carts charge freight on the machine plus the usual rule on belts, billets, and stones.

Only if space and belt cost are the real constraints and you will make short knives. Saving money on a 1×30 hardware sander is the false economy. If you can fund a variable-speed 2×72, that is the machine the rest of the hobby is built around.
Is a belt grinder a kitchen knife sharpener?
No. A knifemaking belt grinder forms bevels on annealed or heat-treated blanks. Kitchen sharpening belongs on a whetstone or a guided stone system. A belt will overheat a thin VG-10 edge if you treat it like a gadget sharpener.
